Friends,

As many of you have heard, Governor Malloy has proposed a motor vehicle tax exemption which would apply to the first $20,000 of assessed value on any motor vehicle. In theory, this exemption would save Connecticut residents some much needed tax-dollars, however in the recent weeks many local officials have publically declared that the tax exemption could force them to increase the taxes on residential or commercial properties because they would be left high and dry trying to find new sources of revenue to cover their losses.

While I am always supportive of measures that would place more money in the hands of tax-payers, this tax exemption would simply put another burden on the shoulders of local officials, who are already dealing with tight budgets. Without implementing additional property tax increases, I worry most municipalities would be forced to make detrimental cuts to schools, senior services, police and fire department services to make up for the lost revenue.

If you would like to voice your concern over this issue, a public hearing on Senate Bill 843, An Act Concerning Revenue Items to Implement the Governor's Budget will be held on:

Monday, March 4, 10:30 a.m.

Room 2E, Legislative Office Building

300 Capitol Avenue, Hartford

Sign-ups for the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee hearing will begin at 8:30 A.M. on the First Floor Atrium of the Legislative Office Building.

For those who cannot testify in person, a PDF version of your testimony may be emailed to finance@cga.ct.gov. Those emailing their testimony should put the word "Testimony" in the subject line.

For any questions on this issue, please contact me at my office by phone at 1-860-240-8700, or by e-mail atTim.Ackert@housegop.ct.gov.

Sincerely,

Dear Neighbors,

I wanted to pass along important information I recently received from the Department of Revenue Services (DRS) regarding changes to state tax refunds.

In an effort to combat fraud and identity theft select taxpayers may have to provide additional information in order to claim their refund checks.

Please read the Frequently Asked Questions below or go to the DRS website http://www.ct.gov/drs/site/default.asp

If you have further questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me at: Tim.Ackert@housegop.ct.gov or by phone at:             1-800-842-1423      .

by kruane
January 23rd, 2013

Many of you have been asking what kind of action the General Assembly will be taking to limit gun violence, expand mental health coverage and enhance school security.  To oversee these very important public policy issues the leaders of the General Assembly have created a bi-partisan task force on gun violence prevention and children’s safety.

The bipartisan task force will be developing recommendations designed to reduce gun violence, enhance school safety and increase access to mental health care.

You can stay updated on the actions taken by the task force by visiting their website atwww.cga.ct.gov/asaferconnecticut.

The website also includes information on the task force’s membership and four scheduled public hearings, as well as a link for submitting online testimony.

If you would like to submit testimony for the upcoming public hearings, you may bring a hard copy to the hearing in person, or email a copy to asaferconnecticut@cga.ct.gov. As testimony is received in person, or by email, it will also be made available for public review on the website.
